Family Background: "My parents both left their small hometowns in Jalisco, Mexico in 1986 to come to the United States. My four siblings and I have all been born and raised in downtown San Jose. ."

Where I Grew Up: San Jose, California

College Education: Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California; BS in Sociology and BA in Ethnic Studies.

"Aha" Moment: "One of these times was perhaps the day when I learned that I can combine community organizing and research to become an scholar activist. In a way I've known for a while now, but I realized that I did not have to let go of one to do the other."

Biggest challenge in getting to college: "Building up a quality resume on top of having a rigorous course load."

Biggest challenge in finishing college: "Juggling family, academics, community outreach and on-campus involvement."

Favorite Mentor: "Aside from the endless support from my parents, my mentor, Mari, has provided me with a fine example of how to excel as an academic and give back to the community at the same time. She helped me get to college by taking me on a tour of the campus, introducing me to professors, and advising me on my application. She has edited papers and invited me to conferences through my college career, and continues to do so to the day. Currently, she is advising me on applications for a MS/Ph. D. program."

Favorite Teacher: My parents, José and Elena, are my favorite teachers. They are also the most patient."

Favorite Author/Book: Toni Morrison.
