About ALearn

ALearn's Mission
ALearn is a non-profit organization committed to helping under-represented students get to and succeed in college. Our programs enhance the opportunities, access and advancement to college for students who will be the first in their family to go to college.

ALearn's Vision
In California, over half of the K-12 students are Hispanic or from other immigrant groups, and many of these students are low income, and are English Language Learners. ALearn has a vision of these students succeeding and going to college with the help of academic programs and community support programs which do the following:
  • Increase their college readiness through programs that prepare them for success in college preparatory programs
  • Increase the awareness of college and desire to complete a college degree among the historically underrepresented students
  • Extend the in-school learning day with complementary, relevant and academically-rigorous after-school programs, extended school day programs and summer programs
  • Reach out to parents, businesses and community members for additional support (physical, academic, financial and emotional) for these students
ALearn's Approach
ALearn takes a comprehensive approach in its programs to support these students.

ALearn:
  • Works with public school districts, closely and year-round, to achieve continuous improvement
  • Builds and strengthens long-term partnerships between universities and school districts and other community-based organizations who are all working on closing the achievement gap
  • Adds value not just via funding but in design, execution and assessment of programs
  • Finds and shares best practices with other educational organizations who are working with underrepresented and lower socio-economic groups
  • Conducts and shares primary research about the Latino and other immigrant populations as background for and a clearer understanding of how to approach our work
  • Helps to build and encourage peer support for a college-going culture for underrepresented students
  • Finds additional ways to use the new media (Internet, social networks) to help encourage and support historically underrepresented students in high school and college
